Getting the Word Out “Winston-Salem.
Where Business Lives!”

New Campaign Highlights All the Right Stuff

Expansion Management magazine rates the Winston-Salem area #4 in the nation for manufacturing expansion and relocation and Site Selection magazine cites North Carolina for having the best business climate in the country. Both underscore the key factors in business site selection: business climate and quality of life.

Business climate is important. Invariably, it’s what makes a project work: convenience and access, quality sites and buildings, experienced workforce, competitive tax rates, etc. All of these are key factors in which Winston-Salem competes effectively. But when it comes to attracting and retaining employees, the lifeblood of any company, quality of life is often a deciding factor.

“Winston-Salem. Where Business Lives!”
is the boast of a new national marketing campaign by Winston-Salem Business Inc., which touts Winston-Salem’s “quality of life” as a key to successful business site selections. The “Where Business Lives!” campaign focuses on how businesses and employees get more out of life living and working in Winston-Salem.

WSBI’s new marketing campaign parallels an AngelouEconomics report presented Nov. 14 that specifically encourages the promotion of this region’s tremendous quality of life to attract and retain quality workers. Angelou’s analysis finds quality of life to be one of the areas greatest strengths and a plus that should be leveraged to market the city and encourage growth.

While quality of life means different things to different people, Winston-Salem’s climate, culture, arts and entertainment, and geographic location provide a wealth of offerings to most every individual. Quite simply, Winston-Salem has extraordinary “livability.”

The campaign specifically illustrates Winston-Salem’s distinctive environment:

  • Highly regarded public schools, with many having not only statewide but also national recognition;
  • Outstanding higher education options including Wake Forest University;
  • Highly educated workforce, that is above the national average for percentage with a bachelor’s degree or higher level of education;
  • Ideal geographic location, close to beaches and mountains, centrally located on the east coast between Washington, D.C. and Atlanta;
  • Nationally recognized college athletics competition, film festivals, award-winning golf courses, tourist activities, and our own wine country.
The “Where Business Lives!” campaign rolled out fall 2003 with advertisements appearing in national and regional economic development magazines.

The campaign also will be incorporated into ongoing grassroots efforts to engage key decision makers. Over the past year, WSBI has developed a comprehensive database of narrowly defined contacts comprising target companies, real estate consultants, business leaders and key allies. Using this database, WSBI will be able to execute timely and meaningful interaction with specific contacts.

The relationship campaign also includes monthly communications through email, direct mail and the Internet to further illustrate to contacts what it means to locate, live and do business in Winston-Salem.
