New Community Profile (Winston-Salem, Greensboro, High Point) for 2011-12
Download the 2011-12 Community Profile, a collaborative publication of local economic development organizations representing High Point, Winston-Salem, and Greensboro have collaborated to publish a brochure, designed to provide a brief economic overview of our communities.
The profile lists our cities’ recent company expansions and our leading corporations and includes the three cities’ shared assets such as our strategic location, exceptional infrastructure, well-prepared workforce, fine higher education institutions, and cultural/recreational amenities. Population figures, tax rates, and other data needed by corporate location decision makers are listed as well.
Smart people. Smart location. Smart decision. Winston-Salem. Winston-Salem is a city of progress. From it's origins as an early Moravian settlement nearly 250 years ago, the community has grown to be a center for business and technology in North Carolina and the Southeast.
Winston-Salem is a primary city of North Carolina's Triad Region. With a population of over 1.6 million, the 12-county area represents a significant market and labor resource for area businesses.
Where we’ve been. After a very successful year in 2010, WSBI has seen client activity remain steady throughout 2011 and has had the opportunity to assist numerous companies interested in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. Caterpillar, whom WSBI has continued assisting through their construction process, celebrated the grand opening of their 850,000 square foot manufacturing facility on November 16th and have already put over 140 local citizens back to work. By leveraging our community’s competitive strengths and resources, WSBI is optimistic that the local economy will rebound out of the recession and continue attracting new businesses to the area.
OUR SUCCESS IS GROWING. WSBI and our business and community partners have achieved great success over the past year. Through collaboration and support from business leaders like you, WSBI has been able to help bring new energy into attracting companies to the area. However, the hard work, persistence and collaboration must continue in order to keep momentum on our side.
Contribute to your own success. Winston-Salem Business Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)(3) that is primarily supported by private investors with annual marketing grants provided by Forsyth County and the City of Winston-Salem. We focus entirely on business recruitment.

Smitty’s Notes is a Web site and monthly e-newsletter that began 1997 with about a dozen subscribers to inform residents and newcomers of events happening in and around Winston-Salem. Today, Smitty’s Notes and SmittysNotes.com rank among the most powerful information sources in Winston-Salem.
History comes to life in Winston-Salem, where some of the best-preserved colonial heritage sites in the country can be found. Members of the Moravian sect settled in the area in the mid-18th century, and eventually established the thriving community of Salem. Today, visitors can see how those early settlers lived, worked and worshiped by visiting the historic settlements of Bethabara Park, Bethania, and Old Salem.
The Reynolda House is an impressive and varied collection of American art in the gracious historic estate of tobacco magnate R.J. Reynolds. Reynolda House Museum of American Art displays a premier collection of American art ranging from the colonial period to the present. Built in 1917, the house originally occupied the center of a 1,067-acre estate. It opened to the public as an institution dedicated to the arts and education in 1965, and as an art museum in 1967.
SciWorks thrills children of all ages with interactive, hands-on exhibits, a planetarium and a 15-acre environmental park. The mission of SciWorks is to promote literacy, life-long learning and appreciation of the science by providing innovative, educational and recreational experiences for all people through interactive exhibits, collections, an environmental park and unique facilities.
Where we’ve been. Despite a difficult economy, Winston-Salem Business Inc. experienced steady activity throughout 2009. WSBI assisted the location or expansion of three manufacturing projects. The following pages are a summary of those projects and more detailed information about marketing initiatives in 2009.
