Liberty Hardware Expands in Winston-Salem
Liberty Hardware
Liberty Hardware announced the expansion of its operations in Winston-Salem after reaching a lease agreement with Johnson Development Associates for a 526,000-square-foot distribution center in Union Cross Business Park. Combined with the company's existing 690,000 sf headquarters and distribution facility, Liberty Hardware will occupy over 1.2 million square feet of space at Union Cross Business Park.

"We are very pleased with the expansion announcement and appreciate the significant investment Liberty Hardware has chosen to make in Winston-Salem," said Winston-Salem Business Inc. president Bob Leak. "This announcement further validates our community as an excellent place for logistics and distribution operations."

The company has not announced the number of new jobs the expansion will create but the project is valued at approximately $22 million. Spartanburg, S. C.-based Johnson Development Associates has now developed approximately 1 million square feet of industrial space in Union Cross Business Park.

Lawsuit Challenging Dell Incentives Tossed Out

Working together, local and state governments provided an attractive incentives package that helped motivate Texas-based Dell to build a computer-production factory in Forsyth County in 2005. A lawsuit was filed shortly thereafter challenging the legality of the incentives.

Last fall, the N.C. Court of Appeals upheld the legality of the incentives, saying the matter had been decided in North Carolina's courts more than 10 years ago. On April 10, the N.C. Supreme Court dismissed the appeal.

Manufacturing announced in January that it has chosen Rural Hall in County for its newest location. Ken Garner Manufacturing Inc. is North America's leading supplier of counterweights for medium sized hydraulic excavators and mobile cranes, and supplies a number of major manufacturers in the Eastern United States.

"We are excited that Ken Garner Manufacturing has selected Forsyth County for its expansion," said Winston-Salem Business Inc. president Bob Leak, Jr. "This project is going to bring over 70 quality manufacturing jobs to the community and it will revitalize a property that was previously underutilized."

The Chattanooga, Tenn.-based company will create over 70 new jobs and invest over $2 million in facility upgrades and equipment over the next three years.

Company owner Ken Garner said his company "considers a skilled and highly motivated workforce to be absolutely essential to the success of this expansion" and was one reason the company chose Forsyth County and North Carolina.
